Policyholder Information

Company Overview

Lumbermens Mutual Casualty Company is primarily engaged in property and casualty insurance, with health insurance representing a very small proportion of their total business. The company and its affiliates formerly operated under the trade names “Kemper” and “Kemper Insurance Companies”. They now operate under the tradename “Lumbermens Mutual Group” as a result of the sale of the former name in June 2010 to Unitrin Inc.. The company has been under a confidential administrative supervision order that allowed department oversight of a runoff plan filed with the Illinois Department of Insurance since 2003. In July 2012, the Illinois Department of Insurance placed Lumbermens into rehabilitation.

Currently there appears to be a small block of long term disability claims (approximately 230) along with some guaranteed renewable business on the books of the company. It appears from preliminary data that approximately 75% of the business will be covered by the life and health guaranty associations. Efforts are currently underway to obtain more details on the policy liabilities and administrative practices.
